Literary Analysis Of The Outsiders - 1217 Words

The Same Sunset â€Å"Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren’t so different. We saw the same sunset.† This is what Ponyboy thinks to himself as he was walking with Cherry after the movies. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the mid 1960’s. This story is all about Ponyboy growing up around the conflicts between two societies. All of the main characters face many conflicts, which are mainly about their social statuses, about the rich and about the poor. In the story, Johnny kills Bob, who is Cherry’s boyfriend at the time, this causes Johnny and Ponyboy to hide out at an abandoned church; there is a fire at the church, and Johnny and Ponyboy save multiple kids, but injuring themselves in the process. Johnny†¦show more content†¦Cherry can be classified as emotional for a number of reasons. In one instance, Cherry and Marcia decided to leave with their boyfriends after the movies, so that they would not fight Po nyboy, Johnny, and Two- Bit. As Cherry was about to leave, she turns to Ponyboy and says, â€Å"I can fall in love with Dally Winston, I hope I never see him again, or I will† (Hinton 46). This is showing that it does not matter if Cherry is a Soc, she can fall in love with someone who is not a part of, or in her social status. Another example of her being emotional is when Cherry and Ponyboy are waiting in line for popcorn at the movies; Ponyboy is telling Cherry how Socs beat up Johnny bad. She then tells Ponyboy, â€Å"Things are rough all over† (Hinton 35). What Cherry is meaning is that even though most Greasers do not think so, Socs also have similar, yet different problems of their own that they deal with on a daily basis. It is clear that Cherry can be described as a very emotional character. Her red hair is not the only thing that is fiery about Cherry Valance. Fiery or hot-tempered are things that describe Cherry in many different situations throughout this n ovel. This is very clear when Dally was at the movies with Ponyboy and Johnny; he was acting very inappropriate around Cherry and Marcia while they were trying to watch the movie. The War Between Iraq And Iran - 1672 Words

The war between Iraq and Iran initiated by Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein in September 1980 provided no gains or benefits to either country, at the end of the war in July of 1988 after 8 long years. At the conclusion of many wars throughout history, at least one party resulted in gaining territory, wealth, power, and other profits. However, in reality it is understood that no one ever wins in war due to the adverse affects among innocent humanity; exemplified by the Iraq-Iran war. The initial conflict begins in 1979 when Iran went through the Islamic Revolution overthrowing Mohammad Reza Shah, the current head of the Iran. This period of Iranian turmoil lead to a many changes in government, creating a politically weak country. Trying to gain from Iran’s turmoil Saddam Hussein made plans to control the region. Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq, wanted â€Å"exclusive Iraqi sovereignty over the Shatt-el-Arab River†¦ forming Iraq’s best outlet to the sea† (Hi story). This would give Iraq political and economic dominance of the gulf while making Hussein the leader of the Arab world. Saddam also felt that the new Iran revolutionary leadership â€Å"would threaten Iraq’s delicate Sunni Shia balance† (Federal Research Division). Bullying is defined as â€Å"verbal, physical, or psychological abuse or teasing accompanied by real or perceived imbalance of power† and is usually targets what children perceive as different (Olweus, 1993). Bullying is prevalent across the nation. It has devastating effects on students each day. Bullying is a problem for all students, regardless of race, gender or class. The National Education Association reports that 160,000 children are absent intentionally from school each day because they fear being bullied whether it is an attack or just intimidation by other students. This accounts for 15% of all school absenteeism (Hunter, 2012). Dan Olweus (1993) from the National School Safety Center tells us that bullying includes three parts: (1)†¦show more content†¦Students experience many negative effects from bullying which effect their mental, emotional, and physical health as well as their social well being and academic performance. (Berger, 2007). Diversity and bul lying are often linked. Learning to respect diversity means that we as a school district and community must eliminate bullying (San Antonio Salfass, 2007). Much research has been done on student perceptions of bullying but few have examined the issue from the perspective of school counselors. The purpose of this study is to identify the most prevalent forms of bullying on a high school campus and identify which strategies are most effective to prevent or respond to bullying. The study will also identify the most effective strategies to improve student achievement and attendance for those students who have experienced bullying. Students must feel safe to learn. Students who are bullied have a propensity to avoid the bullies; therefore, they choose not to attend school. Poor attendance often will result in poor grades and even dropping out of school. Bullying is such a dominant problem in schools that counselors must strive to discover effective strategies to address the issue.
